Tips
To best use Location Manager 2, follow these steps:
Getting Started
- Introduction: Location Manager 2 is now a full map application available only from the toolbar in flightmode. This is because MicroSobo disabled the ability to modify the MSFS UI in MSFS 2024.
Open it by clicking on the Map icon you will find on the toolbar, once installed. To intstall, see Installation section down below on this page if you need guidance on that.
Familiarize yourself with the program by reading the introduction and overview of the tabs in the left panel. Extensive help on major functions is available on the right panel. - Map Features: Learn how to resize the map and toolbar by dragging the edges or corners. At the moment there is no UI scaling control in MSFS 2024 like MSFS 2020, so toolbar panels look a larger.
Experiment to discover how you like to use it. See the screenshots above for different examples.
Let me know how you use it, I’d love to see how different people discover uses for it.
The four main panel sizes you want to expose are as follows (reference the screenshots above):- Panel Completely Minimized: This is when you use the top right minimize button of the toolbar panel to “roll up” the panel and hide it completely, with just the header bar showing. Useful if you don’t want to completely close the panel and quickly reopen it.
- Minimum Map Size: This is when you drag the bottom of the location manager panel up as far as it can go. There is minimum size with a small map and a header controls bar and a footer controls bar with the wind direction. Useful for when you want to navigate with it, using different map layers.
- Minimum Map Plus: This is only slightly bigger than #2, but if you pull the bottom of the panel down a little more you will get the real time aircraft data. Useful in some situations like teleporting to quickly see the altitude, pressure, and temperature.
- Panel Completely Maximized: This is when pull the bottom of the panel down all the way towards the bottom of the screen to expose the location data grid. When you see the pagination control with number of locations then you’ve gone far enough. if you see a little white space between the map and the grid, you can drag the bottom up a little more. It’s not fully responsive yet, but I hope to work on that more if the sim expands on the UI controls for scaling.
Saving and Managing Locations
- Save Locations: Click on the map to select a location. If you select a scanned airport, runway label, or gate, the teleport panel will open with the selected details. The map will open the teleport panel on the left, click on the save button and the location will be added to the bottom of the grid. You can then edit the name, tags, or notes as needed.
You can save locations while doing activities like following a flightplan and you see somewhere interesting you want to check later, or do it as a dedicated map exploration activity while on the ground as a form of pre-flight flight prep. - Manage Locations: Use the grid to view, filter, and sort your saved locations. You can edit or delete locations directly from the grid. Note: The grid size is limited to 3 or 4 lines at the moment (depending on your monitor). Please see the FAQ for a more detailed explanation for this design decision. All feedback is welcome though, please let me know how you use Location Manager 2 and what you would like to see. I can’t promise I can make it happen (yet) but it all goes into the mix.
- Export/Import Data: Use the export button to save your location data to a text file. Import data by pasting it into the provided text area and clicking the import button. Swap with friends!
- Important!! Import Data Overwrites: Import is currently set to clean all existing data and replace it with the import data. Please use the export function first to save your current data before import. There is no data merge capability at this time, for various reasons, so approach it with a backup/restore mindset, and save your location data into well named files for certain situations so you can export/import anytime depending on your needs.
Teleporting to Locations
- Select a Location
- From the grid: Click on a saved location in the grid (click the Alt column cell) to show that location on the map and open the teleport panel with the location details.
- Click on the map: Click on the map in two ways. You can turn on the scanner with the Scan button above the map, wait a second to see MSFS airports populate (zoom out and scroll if needed), then click on any airport, runway label, or gate marker to select that marker highlighted with a yellow circle. Alternatively, click anywhere to mark the map with a red dot. In both cases, the map will open the teleport panel on the left with the location details. You can turn of the scanner to save resources if you’ve finished panning/zooming the map.
- Configure Settings: Adjust the position, distance, height, and speed settings in the teleport panel.
- Teleport: Click the teleport button to move your aircraft to the selected location.
- IMPORTANT #1: Pay attention to the teleport progress message at the top of the teleport panel. Do not interrupt the process. You can teleport any distance but long teleports take longer as the further away the target is the more work the sim needs to do to stream in the new location before releasing you back into the sim.
- IMPORTANT #2: Turn off damage and realism in the settings if you are using teleporting. Also disable G-Forces.
Training for Takeoffs and Landings
- Select a Runway Label: Scan for MSFS airports and click on a runway label marker to open the teleport panel.
- Configure Training Settings: Set the desired position, height, and speed for takeoff or landing.
- Start Training: Click the teleport button to move your aircraft to the selected position and begin your training session.
- Read my blog post on The Power of Repetition and Interleaved Learning in MSFS
- EFB: The new EFB for MSFS 2024 is a great companion tool for Location Manager 2, or perhaps vice versa! You should take the time to explore it when using it for training as it offers an additional level of customization that can expand your training options:
- Checklists: Comprehensive checklists for each flight phase you can use to guide yourself and learn in depth.
- Flight Performance
- Mass and Balance: Change the aircraft configuration to change the handling.
- Environment: Useful tools for the different flight phase calculations Takeoff & Landing
Customization and Settings
- Grid Settings: Adjust the grid font size and layout to your preference.
- Map API Keys: Enter your OpenAIP and Bing Maps keys in the settings tab to access additional map data.
- OpenAIP API Key: Sign up at https://www.openaip.net/ to get an API key, paste it into the settings and save.
- Bing Maps API Key: Sign up at https://www.bingmapsportal.com/ to an API key, paste it into the settings and save.
- Nearest Airports Search: Configure the refresh interval, number of airports, and search range for the airport scanner. Configure the number of gates shown to control performance. Stop and start the scanner anytime, especially useful for sustained flying in one location once you scanned the needed airports. Combine with OpenAIP data to uncover hidden airstrips.
Support and Help

Please read the requirements for submitting a support request, and please also read the tips, help, and known issues beforehand in case something there solves the issue or gives you some extra insight I can make use of.
By following these steps, you can efficiently use Location Manager 2 to manage locations, teleport to different places, and train for takeoffs and landings within the MSFS simulator. Unlock a world of virtual exploration!
Location Teleporting – Detailed Notes
Teleporting Options
- Sometimes you may get a bad teleport to ground and the plane will be in an unusual attitude. No problem, just hit Teleport again to regenerate the teleport and reposition. Teleporting is dynamically adjusted based on distance, so it will be super quick and in cases like this it just takes 1 or 2 (at most) extra teleports to set the plane correctly. If you really need to reset the planes attitude before teleporting use a quick slew mode on and off again, usually bound to the Y (Shift Z in 2024) key, and the plane will be reset in the best position attitude for teleporting.
- Please turn all your Assistance Options/Failure and Damage options to OFF in order to avoid issues that may happen with teleporting collisions (ie: ground/aircraft while the new location loads in). Also be aware there may be some issues with Aircraft using custom damage modelling that may override these settings. I suggest testing first with a base aircraft that does not have these issues.
Starting on Ground or in the Air configures the plane differently.
- Ground
- Teleport will teleport you to the lat/long of the location if no parking spots are available, or to the selected parking spot.
- Plane state will be:
- Flaps up
- Gear down
- Engine off
- Trims are untouched
- Plane direction
- ICAO locations: Plane direction will be parallel to the first runway
- Non ICAO locations: Plane will be assigned a random direction. Adjust it with the heading slider at the top as needed.
- Air
- Before using the Fly options make sure your flight systems are all up and running, either by hot starting on the runway, or cold starting and doing a full startup procedure (or Ctrl-E if supported). Fly only turns the engine on, not the associated flight systems.
- You can teleport to a selected runway for take off or to the air for landing practice (ICAO locations only). Random position locations in the air are also available for non-ICAO locations.
- If nothing happens when you click Fly please check the message in the top left
- Position has the following selections
- Take Off (ICAO location only)
- Final (ICAO location only)
- Base L / Base R (ICAO location only)
- Cross L / Cross R (ICAO location only)
- Downwind L / Downwind R (ICAO location only)
- Random – assigns a random position and bearing at the specified distance from the location lat/long
- RandomTo – assigns a random position at the specified distance from the location lat/long, pointing at the location
- RandomFrom – assigns a random position at the specified distance from the location lat/long, pointing away from the location
- Set options for Distance, Height, or Speed lets you choose from the following ranges at stepped intervals:
- Distance: 0.25 to 25km
- Height: 125 ft to 30000 ft
- Speed: 50kts to 400kts
- Random options for Distance, Height, or Speed will select a value from the following subset of number options:
- Distance: 0.25 to 6km
- Height: 125 ft to 5000 ft
- Speed: 55kts to 125kts
- Take off practice.
- This only needs you to select Position: Take Off & the runway you want to take off from, then click Teleport to teleport there
- Plane will be aligned to the runway magnetic bearing
- Plane state will be:
- Flaps up
- Gear down
- Engine on
- Trims are untouched, so check as per normal take off checklist before take off.
- Take off practice is totally doable in non-ICAO locations, but as they are point lat/long locations without “real” runways your start direction will be random. Use the heading slider up top to adjust your heading before take off. Some GPS’s will not immediately align to this new heading and you may need to taxi the plane a little to get them to re-register the new heading.
- Landing Practice
- The following positions are for landing practice: Final, Base L/R, Cross L/R, Downwind L/R, Random, RandomTo, RandomFrom. You need to select all the dropdowns to teleport to the air ie: Position, Distance, Height, and Speed.
- Pause checkbox controls whether you will be paused after teleport. This is useful so you can double check things before unpausing to continue the exercise. Best to bind active pause to a button for easy access.
- Plane state will be set to:
- Engine on
- Gear up
- Flaps up
- Trims untouched, so reset them if needed before hitting fly.
- Landing practice is totally doable in non-ICAO locations, but as they are point lat/long locations without “real” runways your start direction will be random depending on which random direction option you select. It’s fun though, try it. Use the heading slider up top to adjust your heading if you wish.
- ILS Landing Practice
- If a runway has an associated ILS frequency it will be loaded into the ILS field next to the runway dropdown when the runway is selected.
- Tune & activate the frequency, align yourself to the runway, and at the ILS detection distance you will see it on the PFD
- Make sure you activate the ILS frequency when unpaused, as if you do it in pause mode it sometimes doesn’t trigger properly
FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why is this a new version?
A: The MSFS 2024 UI has been secured by Microsoft/Asobo, rendering it unmodifiable. Unable to alter the Aircraft manager, I opted to revamp the Location Manager with a proprietary map interface since using the main map for location selection in MSFS is no longer possible. This overhaul was not trivial, especially with a persistent rendering bug in MSFS 2024 that causes severe map flickering.
Faced with no imminent fix, the choice was to abandon the project or forge a new path; I chose the latter. It required considerable effort, but it paid off with a superior map quality. Location Manager 2 now boasts numerous new features, and I eagerly anticipate your engagement with them to enhance your exploration and skill mastery in MSFS 2024.
Q: Is the upgrade from Location Manager for MSFS 2020 to MSFS 2024 free?
A: Given the substantial work required to develop this version and the introduction of new benefits and features, it is not feasible to provide this as a free upgrade. However, I have exciting plans for it and will explore them further as MSFS 2024 becomes more stable.
Q: Why is the grid size only 3 or 4 lines?
A: Unfortunately, there’s some limitations on the UI side with MSFS 2024, lack of a scaling control being a big one. It’s also difficult to manage two applications such as the map and the grid together in the one panel. The grid is scrollable, and all the column headers are sortable and filterable so you can search and narrow down what you need. So, I made a design decision for V1 to limit the grid size and allow the map to be more resizable. However, I will continue to work on it to hopefully allow a bigger grid window, depending on what may be possible keeping in mind the different use cases and performance.
Q: Does it work in VR?
A: Unfortunately I can’t verify VR compatibility. It works as a standard MSFS 2D toolbar app, so if the toolbar apps are working in VR as per a normal 2D VR toolbar panel app it *should* work. It’s implemented the same way Location Manager for MSFS 2020 is.
Known Issues
2025-01-13 Location Manager 2 is no longer officially compatible with MSFS 2020 due to a recent MSFS 2020 update breaking compatibility. As it’s no possible to currently fix this, Location Manager 2 is now officially only 2024 compatible.
Note: MSFS 2024 had quite a rocky launch (to say the least!) and it’s quickly getting some patches to fix some of the more glaring issues. I categorize the experience as moments of beauty and brilliance interrupted by an occasional pie in the face.
MSFS 2024 may crash on you for various reasons while using Location Manager 2, which may not be at fault. In my testing I’ve had many crashes, including PC freezes and CTD’s due to multiple reasons not involving Locman2, typical causes being sim issues, plane issues, or maybe even liveries. These will no doubt increase as we get more addons, through no fault of the developers. It’s the price we pay for engaging with a moving target still under development.
Please let me know if you have any Location Manager 2 issues, what happened and how, and I will list them here with any workarounds or fixes I find.
- Addon Conflicts. There are no known addon conflicts at this time, but it doesn’t mean there are not any. If you do experience issues try running using addons linker to run it with only LM2 in community folder to confirm it works ok like that. Then add the addons back in progressively in small amounts until the issue reappears. This way you can narrow down the conflict add on fairly quickly.
- Time Slider: Time is currently broken in the MSFS SDK and is still broken in release V1.2.7.0 10th Dec 2024.
My bug report on the dev forum is still not acknowledged, but I’ve raised the issue again. Note: Issue now acknowledge by Asobo, they are looking into it.
The time slider has been left operational in anticipation of this working again after the next update. We’ll monitor it and see. - FPS Slowdowns: You may encounter some FPS slowdowns occasionally when the panel has been open some time, especially the first time. I’m unsure if this is a general panel issue, but in any event the solution I’ve found for now is just close the LocMan2 panel and reopen it, and your FPS issue should be clear. I continue to track this.
- Airports with parallel runways: Some airports, not all, with parallel runways are not marked correctly as L(eft), R(ight) or C(entre) so pattern visualization on a runway marker with some of these may select a different runway named the same. I’m still working on a solution for this. You can still do the circuit, though, just be aware that the pattern visualization may be displayed over another parallel runway for cases with this issue.
- Heliport Altitudes: When saving heliports it seems a lot of them are set with altitude of 0 in the db. That won’t affect how you use them as Location Manager 2 has dynamic height adjustment, but it means saved heliports in the grid may have incorrect altitude, so sorting or filtering on them will not be correct. Workaround for this is to use the notes field to store the correct altitude once you start at one, either from your instruments or the readout in LocMan2.
- Side Panels not opening. This has only been reported by one user in MSFS 2020, and I can’t replicate it. It could possibly be an addon conflict. Some things to try if this occurs, to see if you can pinpoint the issue:
- Use addons linker to just run it with LM2 in community. My 2020 version is pretty slimmed down atm. If you are exporting then try with minimal addons while using it.
- Try and trigger the side panels by clicking on the map to auto open.
- Try closing LM2 and reopening it.
- Try a different aircraft and location. Possibly a conflict there, though I didn’t experience any in 2020 (2024 has some planes which can cause CTD’s atm though).
Installation
The product is delivered as an MSFS package to be installed in the MSFS Community folder.
Install
- Unzip the downloaded zip file to a location (and keep it for the included documentation)
- Move the included package folder(s) in “Location Manager 2” folder into your community folder.
Update
- Delete the old package folder(s) from your community folder
- Replace with the new package folder as in the install process above.
All data is stored using the MSFS SDK data storage routines and is part of your cloud save, so is independent of the add on (unless something changes and the data needs to be migrated, which has happened in the past due to SDK changes). Cloud saves can be corrupted or lost by CTD’s however, but if that happens you have bigger issues. Never close MSFS by the top right window, as that does not trigger data saving to the cloud, always close via the bottom left menu. This is direct advice from Asobo developers.
Uninstall
Remove Location Manager from your MSFS community folder.
If it’s the MSFS Marketplace version (TBA) uninstall/delete the package from the marketplace in game.
